First grade writing and narratives

Writing Personal Narratives in First Grade

Where did you go? Many of the prompts allow students to focus on all of the elements of narrative writing, while others simply serve as an introduction to the basic structure of telling a story. Write a story about the coolest place you ever went to. What do you like best about it?

Then we streeeeeetch out our drawings. How did you feel? I also like to listen to my students explain their work to a partner as they point out different parts of their stories. Write about a time when you learned a new skill. Write a story about your favorite place in the world.

My students also think of a title for their story and create a cover page. My students actually write, edit, and revise many different narratives throughout a week period. Write about a time when you got to do something fun that only kids can do. Each day, I introduce one skill with the anchor chart, we read a FROGGY book and see how Jonathon London uses it, then we go into our rough drafts and try to add it into our story!

How did you meet him or her? Write about your favorite toy. Write about the first time you rode a bicycle. Write about a time when you got to stay up late. Why is it so special? What does the animal like to do?

What did you do with the extra time? How do you think your parents felt? Write about a time when your family went out to dinner. Write about a time when your family went to a carnival or festival.

Write a story about your best friend. Publish Last, but certainly not least, my students go on to publish their final works! These are the times where I like to talk about using a clear opening to set our story up and wrapping it all up with nice closing.
